The Rurouni Kenshinanime is the adaptation of the manga series with the same name by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Situated during the early Meiji period in Japan, the story tells about a fictional assassin named Kenshin Himura, who becomes a wanderer to protect the people of Japan.
The anime, directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, began airing on Japan's Fuji TV on January 10, 1996 and ended on September 8, 1998. It was produced by Aniplex and Fuji TV, and was animated from episode 1 to 70 by Studio Gallop, whereas the episodes from 70 onwards were animated by Studio Deen. The final episode, episode 95, did not air in Japan, but was a bonus episode for the VHS and DVD releases.[1] The TV series was later licensed in North America by Media Blasters, who split it up into 'seasons', and released on DVD. It started airing in the US on Cartoon Network as a part of the Toonami block on March 17, 2003, but ended at the completion of the 'Season 2' (episode 62).[2] Episodes 63-95 did not air, but were included in the DVD release.[3] The twenty-two English DVDs from the series were released from July 18, 2000 to September 24, 2002. Each of them contain four episodes except for the volume 22 which contains five episodes.[1] The 'seasons' were later released in three premium 'Bento box' DVD boxes on November 18, 2003, March 30, 2004 and July 27, 2004. They were released again, but in new packaging as 'economy box' sets on November 15, 2005, January 17, 2006 and February 14, 2006.
There were 95 episodes in the Rurouni Kenshin's TV series, but there are also two original video animation (OVA) series which have respectively four and two episodes. The first of them, Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal was released in 1999 in Japan and in 2003 was collected into a two-hour feature-length motion picture with new animated sequences and released in North America as a Director's Cut DVD.[4] The second OVA is Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection, composed of two episodes that were originally released on December 12, 2001 in Japan. It was later released in the United States by ADV Films in DVD on March 25, 2003, while a Director's Cut edition was later released. Both OVAs were eventually released on Blu-ray Disc by Aniplex of America in 2011.[5]
A series of two theatrical movies, retelling the story of the second arc/season, was announced in April 2011. Part 1 titled Rurouni Kenshin: Shin Kyoto-Hen Zenpen Homura no Ori ('Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc Part I: Cage of Flames') premiered on December 17, 2011 and ran at Tokyo's Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro theater and Osaka's Cine-Libre Umeda theater for one week only.[6] It was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 21, 2012.[7]

A note on the 'Season' nomenclature:
The 'seasons' that comprise the following list correspond to Media Blaster's release of the series in North America. In Japan, Rurouni Kenshin was aired year-round continuously, with regular preemptions for sporting events and television specials taking place, not split into standard seasonal cycles.

The squad must get past the Oniwabanshū to bring Megumi home. Kenshin defeats Han'nya, and with Sanosuke by his side, battles Commander Aoshi.

Shura learns who gave Iwazo opium and challenges Ginjo, but he fights dirty. Kenshin steps in, but Geki deals a lethal blow to all of Kairyu Island.
A brief respite for the group is shattered by a ruthless former Shinsengumi captain who reminds Kenshin of the bad times during the Bakumatsu.
Following another assassination attempt on Kenshin, former Shinsengumi captain Saito reappears to finish the job, but Kaoru tries to intervene.
On the brink of reverting to his former man-slaying persona, Kenshin is saved by Saito's superior Okubo, who forces Kenshin into a difficult choice.
Kenshin decides to accept Okubo's offer to travel to Kyoto and stop Shishio from gathering an army to overthrow the government.
Depressed at Kenshin's parting, Kaoru decides to follow him to Kyoto. So does Sanosuke, despite warnings from Saito that he'll be a liability there.
After defeating four monks loyal to Shishio, the determined Aoshi refuses to join his ranks, intent on proving his superiority against Kenshin.
When she encounters Kenshin in a forest, a female bandit and former Oniwabanshu named Misao begins pursuing him, hoping he'll lead her to Aoshi.
After discovering an unconscious Eiji in the woods, Kenshin and Misao accompany him back to his village and encounter Shishio’s troops.
While Eiji and Misao make their way to Shishio's castle in hopes of fighting Senkaku, Kenshin has already engaged him in combat.
Kenshin confronts Shishio, who refuses to fight him in a weakened state and instead bids Sojiro to battle in his place.
Lost in a forest, Sanosuke meets the kindly monk Anji, who feeds the wanderer and instructs him in a powerfully destructive punching technique.

Sanosuke uses the attack he learned from Anji to deflect bullets and sinks the battleship, leading Shishio to issue a challenge to Kenshin and his allies.
At a shrine on Mt. Hiei, the trio of Sanosuke, Kenshin and Saito faces the first of the Ten Swords challengers: Sanosuke's mentor Anji.
Sanosuke fights Anji the Destroyer but manages to show him the error of his ways. Kenshin and Saito move on to the next challenger, Usui.
Saito fights the blind Usui, but realizes his opponent's hatred has made him Shishio's pawn. Wounded, Saito uses a move he had once saved for Kenshin.
Kenshin approaches a room and senses the presence of Aoshi, who is determined to defeat Kenshin and prove himself the strongest once and for all.
In a fierce battle against Aoshi, Kenshin tries to keep his word to Misao that he'll return his opponent to the decent, kind-hearted man he once was.
Kaoru, Yahiko and Misao nearly lose their lives in a fierce confrontation with three of the Ten Swords members, only to face three more.
Just when Kenshin's forces are on the brink of defeat, Seijuro appears and convinces Fuji to stand down, leaving Kenshin to fight Sojiro and Shishio.
Sojiro and a wounded Kenshin have their second duel, completing the unfinished business from their first round of combat in Shingetsu Village.
In a flashback, Sojiro is revealed to have been an abused child treated kindly for the first time by Shishio, who gifted to him a valuable sword.
Torn between the dueling philosophies of Shishio's strength and Kenshin's kindness, Sojiro begins to break down during the battle.
The final battle of the man-slayers begins at the top of the Inferno Arena, as Shishio promises to defeat Kenshin in only 15 minutes.
Appearing to be almost invincible, Shishio deals a concussion to Kenshin, then takes down both Saito and Sanosuke, with only Aoshi left to oppose him.
Trying to shake off his injuries, Kenshin rallies and engages Shishio again, but the two opponents appear to remain evenly matched.
On the brink of defeat, Kenshin snatches victory away from Shishio, who literally goes down in flames while his followers burn down the arena.
Kenshin's friends drag him from the arena, but the injured Saito is left behind. Kenshin, Sanosuke and Aoshi regroup with the surviving allies.

Misao is captured and brought to the leader of the army. Elsten fails to prevent the attack, leaving Kenshin just one hour to negotiate peace.
